Thats £3 less than I paid for my "Papyrus" A3 .....[from "Rails of Sheff."]
Just tell her its too much of a bargain to turn down
Nahh ..............seriously,put the extra £3 too and buy a BR livery A4 ..............Every-one has a model of the F'ing Scotsman ................it must be the most over-rated,over-hyped loco ever.
[Ducks and runs for cover]
btw ........[on the LS "Scotty"] ......wot exactly is the second tender,is it just a dummy [empty] or is it electrically connected to the boiler ............ie,does it take more water for longer steaming/running.
If it's just an empty "dummy" .........there must be a gap in the market for the first manufacturer to produce a good example which will go behind any of the numerous examples of the loco.
Best [mischievous ] regards

What is it with the dissing of 4472. Just imagine if Rovex, Tri-ang, Tri-ang/Hornby and Hornby hadn't sold so many then maybe there wouldn't be any rtr model railway manufactures left in this country.
Nobody insults the Spitfire('cept me) even if it is the most over-rated plane ever. Gimme a Mozzie any day. (Drops a 4,000 pound Blockbuster on Terry B.) _________________ Get off the line Bobby!

I think what put me "off" 4472 is that some years ago [ the early 90's] 4472 was stood outside York RM alongside 4468 [my favourite loco] .........and my dear wife [who knows absolutely nuffin about steam engines] pointed at 4472 and said .........."Now that looks like a steam engine ....the blue one does'nt"
Ask any man in the street to name a steam loco and he'll say "Flying Scotsman".
So what is it about the F'ing Scotsman?
It was'nt the fastest steam loco ..........Mallard holds that honour [and iirc,"Papyrus" was the fastest A3].
It was'nt the first to do 100mph .......City of Truro holds that.
It was'nt the biggest .......the Beyer Garretts beat it there.
It was'nt the most powerful ....Staniers Pacifics take that one[even the Thompson A1's put out a whacking 4,000lb more tractive effort than the A3's].
It was'nt even one of the best all-round "useful engines" [dons Fat Controllers hat ] ........arguably,the Black 5's take that one.
It was earmarked for preservation long before the last days of steam .......and looking at the lists of preserved locos now you might notice that the LNER company locos fared worst of all in the preservation stakes [except for the A4's].
On the plus side ..........I've got a model of it myself [although it does'nt really fit in with era I'm modelling]......and it prob'ly has introduced more enthusiasts to RM'ing than any other model.
Oh ...........and by the time the Mozzie was loaded with a 4000lb Blockbuster,a WW1 Sopwith Camel would be able to catch it & shoot it down, you'd need a Lanc to carry that sorta weight [they had 4 Merlin engines in them you see ......and the Merlin was a development from the Spitty] .........although,the Hurricane did actually destroy more enemy planes than the Spits,it was only 'cos there was so many of them.
Best [mischievous] Regards

I think it was just that LNER won the marketing and publicity battle with LMS. Consequently FS became famous for doing London to Edinburgh non-stop. And that's about all, really.
Still, it was a fine looking loco (mind you, all steam engines are good looking to me - with just a couple of exceptions. ) _________________ OK, so now what do I do?

I suspect that maybe a good part of the Flying Scotsmans place in history [and consequently, the fact that it did .....without any doubt win the "publicity battle" for the LNER] was partly due to the LMS Royal Scots ...............A Scot [46113] was the first engine to do London-Glasgow non stop ......and the fact that 46100 "Royal Scot" [sic 46152] toured America.
To the average guy in the street ............it was "The Scotsman" ..............Mr Average prob'ly had no idea if it was the Flying/Royal Scot,Scots Guardsman .........or even the proverbial drunken Scotsman .......the name stuck, and assured 4472's place in history.
Also worth considering is the fact that the A3's were marginally less powerful than the LMS Scots .......[33,150lb to 32,910lb tractive effort ...........from 3 marginally smaller cylinders too] .......the A3's were considerably heavier and the LMS Scots had larger drive wheels ............the LNER were lucky in the fact that they had the best route.
I'm not "dissing" it .......I just think it [4472] is over-hyped ............and I've gotta admit the A3's were one of my favourite loco's,but I'll always remember the "Scotsman" as 60103 ........thats the number it carried when I first saw it.
Best Regards

Firstly, (reaches for shotgun)...
Scotsman is the most famous locomotive in the world as it WAS, Officially, the first locomotive to 100mph. it was also a flagship locomotive for the LNER, being the first pacific the LNER built. It also has the famous link with the LNER's crack express, The Flying Scotsman.
it then also became so famous for being the only steamer allowed on British Rail for a long time, after the end of steam, of course with its second tender. It also had a trip to Australia and America, making it globally recognised.
Anyway, enough of that, I would love to see a video of the DT LS Scotsman, with a nice teak rake!
