The fitting of a Bachmann 36-553 three function decoder to any Lima locomotive is quite simple in that there are only two wires to worry about on the locomotive.
The photo shows three wires and two connections to the infamous Lima Pancake motor. Desolder all the wires from the Pancake motor. Then take the two wires on the left and solder them together and cover the soldered joint with heat shrink tubing. Since the wires are long, cut the wire in the middle and twist together along with the Black or Red wire from the decoder. Solder the wire on the right to either the Black or Red wire on the decoder.
This photo shows all the wires already soldered in place and ready to be covered with heat shrink tubing to prevent the bare joints from shorting against the metal weight fitted in the chassis, and blowing the decoder. The Orange and Grey wires have been lengthen so as they can be soldered to the brush covers on the motor.
The final photo shows the wires soldered to the Pancake motor and you can also see that the other wires from the decoder have been covered with heat shrink tubing.
The loco was then taken up to the layout to access if there was any improvment in the performance.
The chip was reprogrammed to address 3 as it had been used in another locomotive that wasn't running well.
With notch 1 selected, the loco crept away slowly, and gathered speed as each notch was selected. The Lima Growl was still coming from the motor and you could hear the change in speed with each notch being selected, but no whistling coming from the turbo's.
Six Lima Mk2f's was then attached to test the loco on the inclines, this was passed with flying colours.

Despite what folk say about the Lima Pancake motors, in my opinion they are a lot better than the modern Hornby Ringfield motors. _________________ Close the door, put out the light, you know we won't be home tonight !!

The beauty about the Lima Pancake motors are, as Teleman pointed out, that both half's the motor case are plastic. This make it much easier to convert the Lima models for DCC operation.
I wonder if Hornby will release this model at a later date into the Railroad Range? It would be interesting to see if they stick with the same motor, or use their own Ringfield motor.

if they re-release the Lima cl. 40 in the railroad range, it is more than likely to have a ringfield motor, the Deltic re-release was re-done with a ringflield motor.
