Not had an update for quite some time now. I have not realy made much progress over the last 4 or 5 months but recently, I started to get back into the rythem of building the layout. All of the track has been painted (viewable side - the other side will be done when I have got other thinkgs done). The large engine shed roof has been made into two parts which I hope to do stick together later tonight. Plasticard road templates have been cut and I dont know whether I will be painting them with textured paints or using scalescenes tarmac. Depends on money available, it doesn't grow on trees! Today, I have been to the hardware shop. Had a good root through all the bits and bobs boxes and got the things I needed for the Station.

As ou can see, it is not finished but I have sawn the 6mm ply into 2 sections and fixed the straight parts in. They are screwed into the baseboard with right angle joint things with nuts and bolts through them to hold them upright. Hope you get the jist. The platform edging was glued and the plasticard was cut the the right shape - it is not very goos but I am going to tidy it up. The picture above shows a general view of how I would like it to look. There will be a Hornby Bus Stop Shelter and 2 Street Lights with station name signs on. The ballasting will be done tonight in that area and I want to paint the platform top as soon as possible. Te bare wood will be covered in brick paper to look like the station is set below the hight of street and the the surrounding level (a good excuse to hide the line running around the station!). the steps leading down from the road bridge will be bought at some point and the road will have some street lights on and a bit of the bus stop and large pavement at one side. So the bridge will be a / | shape. Sorry if my explanations and diagrams mean nothing to you.

Ballasting has also been started. I know that you should make sure al the electrics work before you start on scenery but I need a few things before I can start the electrics. i am going to try and get some wire from my club for droppers and then i can wire my bus! That will be a relief when that is done. you may be wondering how I will solder my droppers over painted track, well, I wondered that aswell. But, I scrubbed away the paint where the holes are drilled for the droppers. Stupid, I know. So, here are a few pictures of the part ballasted layout.

If you read stayed to read this, Thanks and that is what has happened.

"I scrubbed away the paint where the holes are drilled for the droppers"

Definitely make use of them Will.   I was always told that a good solder joint is started with a good mechanical joint. (i.e. wire wrapped before the final soldering takes place).

Doing it this way has never let me down yet!

Your layout is coming along fine - enjoy it, don't rush it.

Best way to do it Will . Half the art of a good solder joint is make sure its clean before you solder . I use one of these

Thanks for the comments. Would flux do the same job?

Not realy , flux just helps the solder to flow , and if there is to much flux on a joint it will need to be cleaned off before you paint over it if its on the track side

I like the way you have the baseboard conform to the layout and not the other way round as most people do.

Some lovely detailing there Will.  I particularly like the little grassy bit with the railings.

Keep at it!

Modelling is a much better way to show life or realism than drawings or paintings are, models show scale, depth, texture and colour better than paint or pencil can in the same hands, keep at it.

Not been able to make use of these past few days at home but have just been browsing pictures of other layouts for ideas and tips on colours. I have remembered that I have a load of acrylics in a drwaer at my mum's so after Christmas, i'll have a go at making a road colour and get painting it. Once the colour is mixed, I thought of sprinkling some black, very fine scatter and mixing it in to make a textured paint. if that goes to pot, i'll just paint it normally. At the weekend, I built at loading bay for the TMD stores. It is an industrial unit with a raised level for unloading of trucks and wagons (road vehicles) and there is a ramp down to a road level unloading bay. It is made from kit left overs and plasticard. Pictures will come soon.

This tip is on the forum somewhere for making card buildings look better but I can't find it.  It could be of some use to you for your roads Will:
Scrape some pastels (or water colour pencils) with a sharp knife to make some fine black powder and use your finger to spread around areas that see a lot of hard work (loading bays, goods yards etc.).  The effect is brilliant.

Did a bit of road painting, managed to mix a darkish grey but I don't think that it's quite good enough. I'll get some pictures for you to see it. Meanwhile, here is a link to my website which has been updated mainly with information but some pictures on the Night Pictures page.

Been to the model shopd today and bought a few bits. A Knightwing Loco Wash, Knightwing Point Levers/Ground Frames and an Oxford mini van. The loco wash is a good kit, nice and easy to build. It comes with a separate building and a few detailing parts. the only problem was that I realised that the base went UNDER the track. I had to pull it up and get rid of all the ballast Here's some pictures;

And some of the Express Parcels Mini;

And finally of the ground frames;

That's going to be one damn fine layout when you've finished Will.  I'm really looking forward to your updates.

Your layout is looking awsome Will, my dear! I wish Camborne Parkway had been finished to the same high standard... Oh well, there's always Treganstren...
Super work, well done!

I know your feeling, most of my inspiration has come from millions of modern image websites, looking at tiny bits from each. I have exactly the same problem though aswell - MONEY! Why did I chose this expensive hobby? Now that my birthday is not far away, which means I am 15, I can earn some money in more places like pub kitchens ( but its money), whereas at the age I am, no ones accepts 'cos of their insurance. Anyway, thanks for the kind comments and let's hope I can finally get some wiring done (every Saturday I want to do it, I end up in Carlisle, this week it's York!
