OK, so I got my first section of flexi-track today, just so I had something done for my N-Gauge layout. My sister kindly allowed me to test the track with her Elizabethan train set.
The set contained a Graham Farish A4 and a Bachmann standard controller, which I'd been thinking of getting to use for my layout. However, the A4 took off like a rocket when it started to move. Is it the locomotive? And if it isn't what cheap alternative would you suggest that allows slow speed running? _________________ Life is like a box of chocolates, so scoff it all while you can... My only thought is the right power pack with it ? I can't find one to see what the voltage should be _________________ Experience is something you don' t get until just after you need it .

The transformer and controller both said 12v. _________________ Life is like a box of chocolates, so scoff it all while you can... Any more trouble from you, and it's a short sharp visit from the smack fairy!
@Camborner:
What reading do you get on a voltmeter if you connect it parallel to the track and the controller is set to zero?
if you get a reading other than zero volts on the track, the controller is damaged. The power pack should be OK.

I had a Graham Farish locomotive in the early days of N-gauge and was not really impressed with the running performance. It needed a comparatively high voltage to start and then I experienced the same result as you described, compared to a Fleischmann or Arnold loco.
