009 Railbus (i must be mad)As i was the one to ask for a change on the shed to include all things that you are working on ,I thought it best for me to make a start
Over the next month or so (when i feel like it) i will be trying to make this little lot into a railbus !
All the parts have come from ebay over the last 3 months all from diffrent sellers so lets hope it all fits together !The cab has been taken apart as it was to wide so i will trim the front to fit once i have the sides level .
It could all end up in the bit box yet but it looks hopeful

What is it based on?

Like lots of 009 things it freelance , thats what makes 009 fun to model as a lot of it was made in there own workshops with things they had or could get cheep . I have even seen two halfs for a bus joined together to make a coach on a narrow gauge railway

This afternoon i have made a start and the first problem started when it came to fitting the Bachmann motor bogie , it kept on jamming up . So i had a hunt in the bits draws and found an Atlas chassis with a fuel tank on ! even better i thought and with a bit of cutting to the floor it fits a treat and it has traction tyres to , next job will be making pick ups for the rear bogie as it only has pickups on one set of wheels .

As Pol made me get the camera out i have taken some pics of where i am now with it
Just the pick up to sort out on the rear bogie and we will be ready for a test run ,

Looking good. Keep those photo's coming. There's going to be an award near the end of May for the best post/article of the year. *something like a virtual Oscar, but haven't decided on a name yet*

I have spent the evening making the pickups and the glue is now setting on them as the first ones where naff , i hope this time i've got it right but on the bright side i have had it running !! Its needs a bit more work to the motor mounting as it shakes as it runs but it looks like the motor is a tad to low so a few washers will sort that .
Time for a beer now

It lives !!!!!
Rear bogie pick up works and a change to the coupling from the motor and it runs !
The wobble was due to the motor not lining up right with the drive bogie so i used a piece of flexable tubing as washers did not work . It now runs a treat
Now to start on the cab

Even older tom

I'm jealous. All I'm building at the mo is cardboard station. Your railbus sounds a lot more fun Pete!

It is when it goes to plan , no big problems (so far)

Tonight i have wired the pick ups and made a start on the cab
rear bogie pick up
the cab (so far)
The new drive shaft
Last job tonight is to fit a 009 style coupling to the bogie as they have to be stuck in with epoxy resin

I'm still working on it ! It has now had the wheel archies removed and then filled and sanded flush , steps fitted below the drivers doors and sprayed in leather brown matt acryl paint .
I have also put in seats as well but will have to find some passengers to fit in . The roof is beening formed at the moment in my trusty former (cardboard tube and old 'c' batteries) but this takes a while as the heating is not on as much this time of year so its on the fax machine (also a good way of drying paint) so it takes a few days .
Next job is to fit the windows .
So far so good , no real problems

With an old bus like that shouldn't you use U11 batteries? (I think that's the old nane for C batteries).
Teleman
I think your right or was it SP11 ? i can't remember
poliss
SP had the metal case. U11's were cardboard.
Teleman
As long as they form the angle on the roof ok i don't mind I've just had a look and it might be at the right angle in the morning

Want to put in my cupboard next to the immersion heater?
Teleman
Thats an idea , i never thought of that . I have always put them on a rad or for 00 coach roofs i used a 2 inch aerial pole and boiling water
Teleman
I must do some more work on it this week , I have bought some white metal people to sit inside it and the roof is formed now . I'm not happy with the filling on the wheel arch so i will have a go at that to pics to follow later this week

What do you use for filler?
Teleman
I used Milliput white , but it took a long time to set , it was still a bit soft the next day
poliss
How's it coming along?
Teleman
I might do the windows tonight and paint the passengers , as there white metal ones they will add to the weight as well so a test run to will be needed .
Also i have got some Humbrol model filler today , its ready mixed in a tube lets see if that is better .
poliss
I used some Humbrol model filler once. Didn't like it much. Dried too quickly and not very smooth.
Teleman
I have just put some on , lets see what happens , there only small bits to fill so it should not be long before i know
Teleman
Seems to be ok , now back to the painting
poliss
Dou you use an undercoat on the filled parts? Chris Ellis says in his book on how to go plastic modelling that it seals the slightly porous surface.
Teleman
I give it a watered down coat of the same colour first

Do these railbuses have a conductor? I've never been on a branchline with railbuses.
Teleman
I don't know , i've never been on one but i would think they would as they are like a normal loco / carrage that has a guard .
got bored with painting people so i'm glazing it now
poliss
Try painting N scale people. I took one look and bought all ready painted.
Teleman
I normal do , but i wanted them for the extra weight

How about solid metal seats? Bar magnet sort of shapes. I know what I mean but it's hard to describe.
Teleman
I know what you mean , i didn't think of that .To late now as this seats are fitted and painted , never mind i will keep that in mind as i have some more coachies to build
Teleman
Well its almost finished just waiting for the glue to dry on the passangers and the roof can go on . Just the cab window and roof to and it will be finished after a break from it while i was wiring the layout

Clear Floor polish is great for windows. Clear being the brand name.
Teleman
Almost there , the cab is now done , just a lick of paint and fix on the carrage roof and it will be ready
I will paint the roofs cream , not bad for a scrap box build

Bug..r i was hopeing for a 50s look

Looks built in the 50's but has had alot of use and is just about to be overtaken by colour films, if you see what I mean.
Teleman

I'm pleased with the way it turned out

Certaintly not bad for a scrap box build.
