Armature replacementI've ordered a couple of those 5-pole armatures you mentioned Pete and wondered if you had any tips on how to fit them? (e.g. be careful 'cos the floggle toggle spring can fly off etc.)

This isn't the same motor but it is a comprehensive description of the insides of a similar type of motor with tips on cleaning, what faults to look for etc.

I find them easy to fit , The only thing is becareful fo the plastic clips that hold the plate the brushies are in as they can break , and take the brushies and springs out first . I use a cog puller to get the gear off or a screw driver and leaver it off

Thanks Pete. I've got a cog puller from my IBM days. I'll dig it out and dust it off.

They arrived today. Nicely packed in a fag packet! How's that for re-cycling?

Fitted one to my Hornby King (it happens to be Edward 1st , but that will change once my order fom Fox Transfers arrives! ) and the difference is astounding. Very smooth lift and brake. Why aren't all locos 5 pole?
I did find that my 2 armatures were a) different colours and b) had a tiny difference in shaft diameter. The green coloured one had a shaft that fitted the cog perfectly. The red one was a bit narrow and might need packing but I'll try it and see what happens when I convert my Duchess. Well worth £8.00 (including p and p) for each loco.
Did you come across the same problems Pete?

Will it be King Dave? I would Pay to see that.

Is this Fox Transfers thing the same as the repaint? Livery I'd be most interested to see on a King is that of 6018 King Henry VI on her last run. Might do it if I can buy a BR King.

If you mean the repaint of my Duchess, yes. They sell the transfers and nameplates. A great idea to use Henry VI as a subject. I'll see if Fox do a set.
Thanks C

Just remember the GWR numbers! They are absolute hell to get onto the buffer beam... so for everybody else, it'll be as easy as pie.

I've only fitted one so far and that fitted ok , *digs around in bottom of office bin* purple winding on that one , One winding is open curcuit thats why i went looking for motors and found the armatures *throws it back in bin*

Sorry Joe, they don't do a Dave. Chances are because there wasn't such a loco (pity!) but they do all the rest.
Someone said Kings were always painted green. Is this true? Anyone know of an instance of a nice BR Black livery ever being applied to a King? (I like balck engines, OK?)

I would think that to be right as even in the BR days passanger locos were green . Its hard to tell from b/w photos but all the pictures i could find it looked a lighter colour than the smoke box

Haven't googled yet but were any painted wartime black?
|
Camborner

They were always green, they were NEVER black, although they were painted in BR blue, like King Edward II will be when it's finished.

I quote from my book...
'Between (1942) and 1945, all repainted locomotives except 'Castles' and 'Kings' were in unlined green.'

I can't imagine BR Blue on steam locos (other than Mallard and SNG)

You grow to love it. Hornby should make one when it reutrns to steam next year...
They should but they probably won't.

Put it in the SuggestionsForm! On the Hornby Web Page.

Are the X9024 armatures on this page the same or is there something different about them? http://www.model-net.co.uk/Motor.html
|
Teleman
|
In a word yes
These motors are to replace the 3 pole ones (X8438) as they are a diffrent size to the 5 pole one (X9024) which is a little bit smaller in size .
|
Even older tom
|
Cheaper, though, than the ones we've got!
At least ours are in stock and available.
Edit:
Wet day so I can't film (not light enough) so I'll have a go at converting the Duchess motor.
|
Teleman
|
And the right size ! as the Hornby 5 pole motor is smaller

I think Lima might have done one of their Kings in blue. Could be wrong though.
|
Even older tom
|
Thanks Stu, but it's gotta be black.
Pete: Both the locos now run the opposite way to all my other ones. Has this happened to yours? Do you think the windings are wrong on these armatures?
It's not a big problem with the King, I can just swap the wires around but the Duchess uses the motor casing as the neg pickup so it's not possible to alter it. Btw, the magnet was never removed in either case, so it can't be that the poles are wrong.
Cheers

One of the advantages of DCC. Just press a button and the default direction is changed.

Edit at almost 4 pm . It does go the wrong way a quick re wire and it will go the same way as the rest
