Does size matter?Who says everything is bigger in the Sates? Even without my glasses on or the aid of a tape measure, the British Pacific is much bigger than the US one!
You can see it running here (thankfully a re-railer was included - it's near impossible to do it manually!)
Next step, design and build a tiny railroad...

Can you get a Seuthe unit in there ya think?

Err, no, I don't think so.
Even with my passion for smoke, I think I'll give it a miss!

How big is the oval btw?

512 x 402 mm Pol.
I'm planning on making a simple, tiny layout just using the oval. So I'm on the lookout for 'interesting' features I can add (including a small trestle bridge).

There's 'no point' to a layout like that Tom.

The Top picture makes the Duchess look like 0 gauge or maybe even gauge 1, good look with it all, how long is the locomotive by the way Tom? I Like the idea for the layout, maybe you can use that free card kit that Pol gave a link to in a nother thread.

Too true Joe, she does look rather big, doesn't she?
The Z loco is all of 11cm long (including tender) and runs incedibly well - even at scale 20mph speeds.
I'll probably start a new thread showing how NOT to do a Z scale layout.

Quick update... the light on the front of the loco actually works !
The only problem is that it only glows bright enough to see it when the loco is doing a scale 100mph.

That's cool!
Is Z guage freely available in this country? If so, I might trade all the OO stuff in and go really teeny tiny!
|

Freely available, but lots more expensive if you buy new. Tom's set on the Ontracks website is £172.51 for instance. http://tinyurl.com/cleoet
(Wonders if Tom will convert the loco to DCC so the lights are brighter.)

When you see how expensive smaller gauges are E.g: N, Z it makes 00 look really cheap for what you get, 00 Z and N seem to pretty close when it comes to price, the only difference is 0 which is about 3-4 times as expensive as 00, which is weird.

Hi Tom,
There's a workaround for your "lighting problem":
replace the factory built-in light bulb with an SMD warm-white LED + resistor.
I did this in one of my N-scale E-8's made by LifeLike. Headlight is now fully visible at speeds as low as 10 scale mph in analog mode.
However, I'm not very good at soldering SMDs and so I messed up 3 of them before I got it right

Thanks Erhard but if YOU had problems then I'll probably have a catastrophe!
I'll give it a miss, I think.

Well, let's put it this way:
As soon as I started to use the magnifying lamp, it worked pretty well. Doesn't pay if you think you still have a good eyesight in your mid-fifties and don't use your glasses
Now all my engines are equipped with these warm-white LEDs. Simply looks beautiful and a lot better than the blue-white LEDs which give a cold light color. I don't remember any engine that was equipped with neon-lamps as headlights....

Erm, not quite neon, but they are very bright.

That nice Mister Branson says he's increasing my broadband speed so everything will load faster.

Have seen the Z gauge in the 'flesh' today. It is quite remarkably small, but what is more remarkable is the slow speed it can attain.
Nice to see you again Tom.
