Festiniog double ended FairlieI've mentioned this on the old RailForum site. Just in case no-one replies to my post with some useful comments on that site, I would like some feedback on whether it's a good deal or not.
Assuming I build it well, would the £75 outlay for Festiniog double ended Fairlie kit and chassis be a good purchase?

Thanks

I would hope that you would get that back if it was sold on eBay ,they have come up there before and sold for around that price.
Have you ever made a white metal kit before ?

How are you at soldering, supergluing and painting? Price of the kit looks ok. It's a pity you can't zoom the photo's.
You could probably get a GP50 cheaper on fleabay.

I wonder if the kit is as accurate as their spelling. It should be Ffestiniog with 2 f's.

Yes, I've made several white metal kits (including the buses on my layout) so building it won't be a problem.
Thanks for the responses, I think I'll get one and start building it in the Autumn/Winter. (by which time I will have designed new 'plug-in' extentions that will change Ridley from being a town to a narrow gauge terminus with a main line station.)
Cheers

Do you solder or glue yours Tom or like me just glue the small parts and solder the big bits

Just like you, Pete. Solder the big bits - but VERY CAREFULLY so as not to turn the whole thing into a pool of white metal (that's what happened to my first effort )
Also found that superglue is good IF YOU HAVE A GOOD MACHANICAL CONNECTION FIRST. Superglue has no strength in itself. But if used between 2 flat surfaces, it's a brilliant bond.
I use 2 part epoxy on the parts I can't get a good machinical fit on.
Gotta say my final paint finish leaves a lot to be desired sometimes... but I'm working on that.

I don't have a problem with soldering but i do have the right soldering iron for the job . Remember white metal melts at about 220c and if you use a 'normal' soldering iron it tip temp is way over that
I have the older one of these (mine only goes down to 95c and a led display)

But you can find cheeper ones for less than £50
If you like i can 'PM' you next time they have them in the £50 ones that is !!!

You could always build this one instead. No need to buy a Bachmann chassis either.

They look wonderful Pol.
I particularly like the industrials - plenty of scope to design a scene around one of those little beauties.
Hmmmm.... back to the drawing board!
