If we had a forum layout...OK, this is purely hypothetical but let's say we had a large room and sufficient financing to build a layout (forget about the scale and size of the layout for the moment) what part would you like to play in building it and/or what expertise could you bring?
I'm thinking here of ANY area of skill - e.g. from basic woodwork to building or sourcing locos/rolling stock. (But we'll have to face the fact that we'd ALL have to do the nitty gritty ballasting bit ).
Please reply even though someone might have picked what you want to do because there's usually more work than helpers! I just want to see what we all feel we are capable of.
I think I would be best at helping with building the baseboard, the scenic stuff and weathering the rolling stock.

I feel I'd best undertake the extremley labourious and difficult job of twisting that heavy knob on the controller in an effort to make the trains move, maybe with a glass of chilled champagne to help releive the stress of it all...
Um, I don't know really. During the building of both Camborne Parkway and Treganstren, I haven't noted myself as an expert at doing any one thing. Ideas and planning, maybe?
Please may I be excused ballasting sir? Mine all comes apart! It's getting better though...

I'll do the ballasting! I like ballasting! I like track laying as well, but I'm rubbish at it!

I vote for the "dirty" job: Weathering is mine.
Could also offer consist research and make-up and scratchbuilding houses.

I wouldn't mind doing some scenery detail and track weathering - although tedious, somehow therapeutic

I wouldnt mind doing basic woodwork... ie cutting, sanding, drilling and screwing. But I wouldn't be very good... make that useless

That's ok Joe. I used to do woodmachining for a living for four years and I'm still useless.

Some people are good at woodwork, some people just enjoy it, I don't like it when I cut myself though! My finger is only just recovering!

* Makes mental note: Don't ask Pol to do any woodwork and have a large supply of sticking plaster if Joe is anywhere in the vicinity. *

I'm also nnot very fast, it takes me ages to saw things, and I still hurt myself, drilling is fun though!

Drilling is boring actually.

Sawdust in your eye is even more boring though, especially in a dark garage, with no water in arms reach.

Drilling/boring geddit? Oh never mind. <S>
Should always wear safety glasses when woodworking Joe. I could tell you some horror stories about what happened on our shopfloor, but some of you might be eating.

I do now, I Learnt my lesson, I didnt get it at first but now I do...

I'm with you there Pol . You should wear them when soldering to ! I have to wear specs now because my eyes are not as good as they were and they do get covered in flux from soldering , just think for years that has been going into my eyes
