Lima Deltic Class 55 problems (a how NOT to!)

While looking into the problems of my Deltic's unusual running (fast, slow, fast, slow) I noticed that the wheels were a bit grubby.  No worries, thought I, I'll clean them with a track rubber.

Rubber wont fit round the bogie and the wheels are almost impossible to turn by hand.  No problems, I'll take it apart to clean.  Brilliant!

Now, I've never taken any loco apart before.  This was a steep learning curve for me.  I located the tabs holding the body on and gently released them with one of those tiny eletricians screw drivers.  Cue big lead weight that holds the loco on down the track falling onto my knee cap.  Minor set back.

With the bdy off and the powered bogie released from the frame, I was feeling pretty proud of myself.  Gave the wheels a good clean and then carefully wiped them over with a cotton bud to ensure no debris was left.

Putting it all back together was a nightmare.  You need one hand to push the frame in place, another to ease the sides out, a third to clip the tabs back in, a fourth to stop the weight from sliding up and down... Ok, I exaggerate, but after half hour of cliping tabs in one side to find the other side had come out I gave up.  Leave it until tomorrow.

This evening, Mrs TheThing is out, so got back to it.  With fresh eyes and less clumsy hands, I got it all back together in a jiffy.  Pop it on the tracks and....nothing!  Check all the 'joins' and point, no problems.  Run the Lima Class 31 and the 0-6-0T round, fine.  What can it be?

After much fiddling and trying and pushing the Deltic round, it finally dawns on me!  I put the power bogie in the frame back to front!  D'oh!  All apart it come again, reverse the bogie, put the body on (i'm getting good at this now) and it runs!  Hurrah!

Still a  bit slow/fast, but better.  I think now it's mostly because the old track I was given is sooooo dirty.  Out with the track rubber again!

A bit later to say now but i always glue the weight in with hot melt glue , stops it from falling out next time you take it apart

Did you remember to clean the contact strips while you had it apart? Btw, if you could have managed to get the wheels turning by hand then the gears would probably be worn down or loose. The way worm gears work they can only turn via the worm side and not the cog side.
(Hope you can understand my bad description)

Contact strips?!?  Bugger!

Where do I find these?  (Off with the body again!)

hold on finding pictures

found pics
trailing bogie remove clips with care they do break .... and stick back with super glue

inside you will find these bits but make sure you put the wheels back the same way they came out or it won't run !

the motor one is easy ... there is two screws on the underside just take them out and remove the plate and there they are . You have to unsolder the wire to remove it completey?(spelling wrong) but it will move a bit with out

now wheres that beer

Double sided sticky tape (carpet tape) will work if you haven't got a glue gun.

Hmm, I have no soldering iron at present (but another birthday looms!)

Keep at it Hugh, it all gets easier after the first time you take a loco apart.

My first armature replacement took me nearly 2 hours.  The second (I did this morning) took 25 mins and that included having a problem with a loose gear!

I thought you had been to it for years Tom , I was changing them back in the 80s on the old X04 motors , I still have a brand new 5 pole armature still sealed in its wrapper , cost £2.90 back then , and one fitted and ready to go . Changing one in 25 mins is not bad , i have never timed myself as i normaly soak the bits in IPA over night to clean them of all the old muck .

No Pete, not that long.  I built loads of wooden models while the kids were growing up. I've only recently (18 months) got into railway stuff - hence the odd ignorant questions I ask.  (e.g. 'why take traction tyres off?' and 'what's the use of a turntable on an all diesel layout?'   )
