Modern power unit cuts out

Chappie on the Big H is having this problem. I said I'd ask the experts here.

"I have only recently started building up my layout having retired, although I have had a basic Hogwarts kit and some 2nd hand track etc. for some time and used these once in a while.

I'm finding now that the Hornby R965 controller appears to cut out after a couple of minutes use, and I have to wait for some minutes before the unit will work again.
I've tried changing the power supply to an old Triang controller and the trains just run until switched off.
Can anybody assist with this problem please, it would be greatly appreciated"
Teleman

So does Ryans , When i use any of my older 00 locos as the controller is a bit of a wimp at only 500 ma . As for mine (there ECM ones) they shut off at 1500 ma .
The GWR Railcar i have just built will only run for 5 mins on Ryans controller but after half an hour on the ECM one its was still running .
So i would tell him to bin (or sell on ebay) the old controller and buy a 'proper' one that can handle the currant as i don't think we are getting the full story here
