After seeing a poliss' post on the N-Gauge Terrier thread, I thought it might me a good idea to see if I could fit a layout to go under my bed. Mum has said yes to the idea, so here is what I came up with-
The top half is the out of sight area. My question is that if I used DC control, and all the points marked with L were live, would I be able to control the whole layout ,including sidings, with the power coming from the headshunt? I think I may have to make the points at the back un-live, so I can use the sidings and leave the train back there static...
Joe
I want an N gauge layout and have done for ages but i can barely fit 1 00 gauge one in my room never mind an 00 and N gauge mess. Good Luck I like the plan.
Camborner
Cheers, it's designed to live under my bed when not in use. Thinking about it, I may not need to have live points... Oh, a boy gets so confused with this stuff!
Teleman
No you wont need live frog points , unless you want to do a lot more wiring Best to stick with electrofrog ? i think Peco call them because it will keep the wiring simple , but with them small locos (0-4-0) can loose power as they go over them where they don't with live frogs , but live frogs you need to fit a switch normaly on the base of the point motor so adding to the cost
Camborner
OK, cheers Pete! Would a normal Hornby 12V controller work with this layout?
Teleman
Yes it would be fine ,
poliss
Plan looks fine. Plenty of operational potential there.
Not sure about using Hornby controllers with N gauge as I've read that they are of the feedback variety which a lot of N gauge motors don't like, especially the older ones. I'd say use one of the old Graham Farish types such as the Powerbox 0192. You can usually pick one up for under a fiver at model fairs.
Camborner
I'll look out for it, but if I can't find one, I'll go for a standard Bachmann controller, I've just remembered my sister's Graham Farish set had one.
poliss
How about naming it after the Cornish one in the BBC railway walks. Sorry, can't pronounce it, you'll have to watch the prog. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00dzz60
Camborner
I've come up with the name Trepoynt-Tre is a common prefix for Cornish place names, no idea what it means, and according to Wikipedia, Poynt means Well, but I may change the name-Todpool sounds a nice name... I think in my mind, it'll run to Wheal-somewhere.
Camborner
The rough sceniced-up layout.
Teleman
Is it a loop or an end to end ? or are we missing a bit on the plan
Camborner
It's an end to end layout, it's gonna be operated as a preserved line, that allows larger locos like the 9F's and the Manors to work on it.
Teleman
Just thinking , it will take a lot of work to get the coachies out of there siding . If it was my plan i would have the sidings the other way round
Camborner
Ah-well, at least this way it's an excuse to do more shunting!
Teleman
that will keep you busy for hours
Camborner
Woo! Something to keep my from annoying everyone! Camborne Parkway can't do that as it's built above my sister's bedroom, so she hears all the trains moving, so to retaliate, she plays her hardcore club stuff ultra loud!
Is it just me or do you think this topic needs moving? Hardcore rave music is in no way connected to model railway electrics!
Teleman
One song comes to mind .. Black Box , Ride on time
edit for linky bit
Camborner
Good one! I'll be sure to put that on the first vid of this new layout just for you!
Teleman
Thanks I do like it btw , i long time ago i helped run a disco in the Saturday night fever days white suit and all that and have been know to get behind the 'desk' and help out but its all on a laptop nowdays not a turntable in sight ( still got my trusty Technics 1800's from the 70's and they still work )
Camborner
You ran a disco! When it comes to the Central-Station X-Mas party, we know who to call for the DJ...
Teleman
As long as you want late seventys music i will 'spin some discs' I still have a mixer and over 500 singles , no lights though but i'm sure i could borrow some
poliss
How many more of us are DJ's? (Speaking as the older generation green velvet jacket variety.)
poliss
Can't help with the lights Pete. I sold my music to lights, oil wheel and strobe.
Teleman
Oil wheel mine was a load of poo !!! it never worked right so i had the two colour wheels with the prisms on the front , that worked a lot better
upnick
Good layout cambourner look forward to seeing it and plenty of pics in its contruction.
Now the lights 5mm LEDS give out a fair amount of light if thats any helps have few here
Camborner
I think I'm just about decided on the name, Treganstren, it's Cornish for Home-With-Train, Tre-Gans-Tren.
