NRM almost based in peterborough

Found this out the other day when looking for pictures of Peterborough New England Shed.

When the NRM was based in Clapham, London, and were looking for a new home, Peterborough Railway Society (founder group of NVR) proposed that the NRM moved to the recently closed Peterborough East station and loco shed site, with the NVR running into part of the East station.

As it happened the NRM declined and moved to York. NVR never made it to PEterborough East, and in fact, didnt make it to peterborough until 1986 when the extension to the new station on the Woodston Wharf goods yard site was opened.

I think the NRM would of been better in Peterborough, much more central in the country, easier to get to by Rail and Road.
If it had come, Peterborough might of been remembered as the great rail centre it was, with 4 stations, several marshalling yards and at one point 4 loco sheds, instead of 'that place on the ECML' it is now.

What a shame.

Tbh, i'd much prefer it in York. Very interesting information but last time I heard, Peterborough wasn't an international historical and tourist destination! York has got enough to spend a day there. It may be northern of central England and I'm not saying that Peterborough is a dumpbut i've never heard it to be somewhere where you would go for the day (other than the NVR, of course).

Advice for anyone who has not been to York, it is more than 'that place on the ECML', it's a great place

yeah, York is a great place. Admittedly peterborough isnt the most interesting town. Not much to see really, apart from the centruries old Catherdral and NVR. I'm sure if something as high stature as the NRM was in P'boro, there would be more opened to make a day of it.

But York Minster is something else, i'm sure you'll agree, and what attracts people from all over the world to York are the city walls, river, narrow streets like the Shambles and generally, the feel of the place. The NRM is just an added bonus for people visiting York. It also hasn't had much opened with it - other than road train into the centre of York.

The National in NRM includes Scotland. I don't think the people living in Aberdeen would think Peterborough was in a more central location. The NRM should really be in Haltwhistle if you want a central location.

York is a great place, I also think of it as a great place to go out for the day, as Will says 'its a great place' I dont think Ive ever been to Peterborough, only to stop off at a service station on the way back from Holiday last year. But That is coming from me who lives pretty near it anyway.

It'd about the same distance for me as it is for you, about an hour each way...but you have to go further. Hmmm, Haltwhislte - Half way along the Tyne Valley line, even less accessible than York!
