Point operation

Hi,
For my new layout I did intend to buy and operate 5 points and 5 point motors, unfortunatly due to the cost I had to rethink and in a recent article in Hornby Magazine some other methods were described, One of which was Bell cranks, I was just wondering if there were any guides or books on how to do this using Peco code 75 Points, It seems a good idea and in my opinion with less electrics, well theirs less to go wrong I supposse.

A guide or website on this type of method would be helpful, Thank you.

Here's how it's done using the commercial Mercontrol equipment. Not that the wire in tube part is the same principle brake cables work on. The correct name is 'Bowden Cable'.

Homemade version.

An even cheaper way to operate points is by using a stiff stiff rod attached directly under the baseboard. The main disadvantage is that the rods have to be placed along the boards opposite to the points and can't be centrally controlled.

Another easy way is the stud and probe system

Hi  Joe,

Another  method is  to use  push rod  sold for R/C aircraft  control

http://www.shopatron.com/index/102.0.70.525.0.0.0

Under   the name of   Golden rods  manufactured  by Sullivan   the  red  /yellow ones should work   well    and will  need   bent wire   epoxing  in the rod ends.

They can  be bent   to  any  curve and still  work  very smoothly.

If  your model shop    does   R/C   aircraft  he should have these in  stock.

Thanks, Might ask around and see If I can get some thick wire and maybe but some of those things that hold wire to walls and floors etc, just to keep everything straight, thanks everyone, Oh and my Model shop ONLY does trains, but It does occasionally get some spare parts for other items aswell.
