Recent chipping experiencesBasically, this is just a rant about the locos I've just chipped and the poor design of the loco internals.
I wonder if hornby in particular actually fit decoders to those they designated DCC ready?
The Bachmann Class 08 shunter has the screws unerneath things like coupling units, which are the NEM type. Levering these flimsy things out result in damage to the couplings, which have to be replaced. Most annoying. The Class 40's body fixing screws are so deep inside that seeing where to work isn't very clear. Screw bushes are too thin.
The Hornby Railroad 9F has very little room for a Hornby decoder due to the internal weight of the loco and the wiring from the chip. What space there is prevents a Bachmann (Lenz) chip going in as it is too wide for the clearance. The smokebox door had to come out then get put pack in. Same sort of issue with the Hornby castle with the upgraded chassis (which will have a bearing on the new super-detailed version as it is this chassis it will be using).
Don't get me started on Hornby quality control. Let's just say I am more than a little disgusted with some of the things that has come from them as of late.

Wouldn't it be nice if the manufacturers supplied instructions with colour pictures with the DCC ready locomotives.
It wouldn't be that hard to put videos on their websites either. They could avoid the expense of making videos themselves by asking people to send their conversion experiences to them.
