I'm still not sure why they converted it to a reciprocating engine.

Shame it had to be written off after that Crash.
I think if it weren't hauling that train it may have been in the National collection today... Probably waiting to be put back into its Turbine State again.

My reference book is not definitive but it does mention that she went into Crewe works with a defective turbine in 1949 and emerged as a normal engine. Could be they lost interest and couldn't be bothered??

Or it may not have been very economical for the Companies that kept them, Or perhaps there was a lack of spares and shebroke down alot? who knows?

Wikipedia says, "It was taken out of turbine service due to a failed forward turbine, and the turbine was not repaired because Stanier was no longer in charge in the nationalized system."

In this months hornby Mag it has a pic of a turbine loco and someone has made a model to go ontop of a Hornby black five chasis
