The Perennial Problem of Dirty Track and Rusty RailsIn the 1960s Arnold Rapido brought out a unique track type. The rails were chemically etched in brown and the tops of the rails were rounded. This solves too problems. One, the track looks a better colour and two, needs less cleaning.
Another advantage is the illuminated track diagram switches which showed which way the points were set.
The two main problems with the Arnold system are a) the rail ends are staggered so you either have to buy an adaptor track or cut one rail paralel if you want to join it with other makes of track and b) the point motors use a non-standard electrical system which means you can only use Arnold switches.
See http://www.guidetozscale.com/general/Arnold_Rapido/arnold_rapido.html for details of the Arnold system.
