Track and grass and ballast

I've got some grass mat to lay down round my layout.  It's probably a big enough sheet to lay across the whole table top, but would I be right in thinking that I should lay the track, cut the grass round and then ballast?

I'm assuming a bit of grasss under the ballast shoulders wont be a problem, but laying track and ballast over the grass would be a no-no?

I would mark the position of your track with a pencil, then cut the mat to size. Maybe only use a small piece of mat for a village green and use scenic scatter material elsewhere.

Ask 10 modellers what to do and you'll get 10 different answers!  Pol's is a good suggestion, I'd go with that.

like Pol says, I would cut the mat to fit around the track. you could also use scatter material and use the mat for a village green, but I do like grass mats because they are so simple and easy to use! If you like them, by all means use it over your whole layout where you want grass. I also know of many people who have laid their track and ballasted it ontop of grass, it works fine, and I suppose its easy, but i wouldn't do it myself.

Ive done Noakesy's method for My first layout, and it looks fine to me, it doesnt look overly realistic though if used in large quantities as real grass would have some variations in height, colour etc depending on the space.

Brilliant, thanks gents.  Always a source of useful info.

I think I will use the mat as a base, but build up the grass level in some areas to add interest, but I'll cut round the track as suggested.
