Very strange...After problems with the erratic ruuning of my Class 55 Deltic, I've been waiting on a soldering iron so I can take the trailing bogie off to clean the picks ups and put it back on.
Well, the Class 31 started running erratically as well. Took it off the track, gave the wheels a very check clean with the rubber and put it back - crucially the wrong way round (i.e. fan towards the rear) by mistake. Runs perfectly! Tried it the right way round, still erratic! Put the Deltic on the wrong way round and it runs perfectly too!
I haven't changed the electrical input to the track and all of my 'steam' locos are completely uneffected.
Bizarre!

So, when you put them on the track the wrong way round they run perfectly in both directions?

Just run them that way round and see what happens , It might be they need a service

It could be that they have been run one way all their lives before you got them. I've found that my 2nd hand locos run better if you 'reverse' them. Most odd.

With the loco the wrong way round on the track does it pull coaches when they are attached to either end?

The class 31 does, but the 55 Deltic doesn't because it only has a coupling at one end - hence I ran it that way round first!
