Good old Mr. Hornby I sent the 56 on Wed (not Thurs) and it arrived back here at 9.am to-day oiled and greased, so they do dry out.

Shouldn't have dried out if it was a new loco. Maybe it was on the shelf for a long time.

I agree Doug seeing that it`s a loco that has only been released this year, must be short of oil and grease in China?????

It could have been the rubber band on the fan that was squeaking. I've read about other people having problems with that. The service department would lubricate the loco as a matter of course I expect.

Its working just fine and Dandy now, sounds well and runs well, I`ll say this for Hornby I always have a quick responce, the Sir Nigel I sent to Bachmann took a week and a half for them to ring me, to say what the problem was, I already knew it was the wheel crank pin and then it took another 4 days to post it back, they fitted new centre axle wheels charged me £38 and to be honest its not as smooth as it should be, just hope it runs in better.

I have no idea what the response times are of the service departments with my models as I've never had to send any back. I expect them to work out of the box and to last for 20 or more years if looked after properly.

How old was your Sir Nigel?

Just 2 years old cleaned and oiled regular, but the axle crank pin on the Bachmann is pushed in and not screw thread like the Hornby but when it came out it bent the axle rods and the spacer disapered, probably sucked up with the Dapol, but my opinion is the Hornby are made better, even if they are all made at the same factory.

European law gives you a warranty of up to six years. You shouldn't have had to pay full price to repair an inherent fault.

Kader (Bachmann parent co.) bought Sanda Kan, where Hornby models are made, but Bachmann models are made in a different factory.

Funny you should mention that Doug I looked up directive 1999/44/ec and it states a gaurantee of at least 2 years for new goods purchased in the E U I quoted this at my local shop, and all I got was "that dosn`t apply to us" and then went on to say that`s down to the manufacturer.

Well I always thought Bridlington was on another Planet. But joking apart a lot of people don`t know of that Directive.
Forgot to mention first thing Bachmann said was of course that because the loco had been altered waranty`s did not applyi e it was non dcc when I bought it and now it`s dcc with sound.

Was it a DCC ready loco? Was the sound decoder a simple plug fit? If so, then fitting a decoder will not invalidate the warranty. By putting decoder ready on the packaging the manufacturer agrees that you can open her up. How else could you fit a decoder?

No Doug it was a none dcc which was cold wired by Monk Bar Model shop at York, and then sound fitted by Olivia`s of Sheffield. So taken the easy route and paid.

After saying its running well , to-night made another funny noise and guess what the fans don`t work anymore, but it`s running o k. so you where right it`s the fans that are causing the problem.

Just had visitors... and they said can we see your model railway..so proud Dave took them in to the loft boasting this new class 56 from Hornby, and guess what the sound came out with allsorts of funny noises , the fans part worked, then no sound at all, so mr. Co Co the clown is going to go back to visit Mr. Hornby again.
Life is full of surprises...enough to drive a man to drink

You're certainly putting me of British products Dave. I've never had a problem with any of my locos that are under 20 years old.

It`s putting me off as well Doug, but it makes me wonder now why a product that has a R R P of £193 can be bought for £160 and less and in plenty full supply (not like the City of Sheffield) do they know that there is a problem and policy is get them off the shelves. To be fair though the other Hornby loco`s have been o k.
Enough to make one buy continental

The high RRP is just a standard thingy to make you think you're getting a bargain, like those "double discount" sofa sales. Like, when in the last 2 billion years did a sofa shop not have a sale on?

Like the D F S or is it L O L or D C S  mind you half of them go bust and thats a scam we went to D F S in Hull for a new 3 piece and the adverts show what looks good for £500 and finish up at about £1750 and they make you believe you have saved money but it`s cost you 3-4 times the price  occasion5  violent1

Class 56 on it`s way back to Hornby , it had just given up altogether by this morning, still think it has something to do with the fans, but now no movement, no sound, just lights.       The Drama continues..watch this space...to be continued.

Parcel arrived from Margate yesterday (Mr. Hornby) and on opening it, there was a brand new class 56, so to be fair to them they replaced the goods, when I had cut off some pipes that where getting bent and catching on track
which could have disqalified me from claiming a replacement. We will see how long this one lasts     To be continued
